Oak (Red & White)

Red Oak Heartwood is a light to medium brown, commonly with a reddish cast. Red Oaks do not have the level of decay and rot resistance that White Oak possess. Less popular than Red Oak, White Oak has a finer grain and, quarter sawn specifically, displays medullar figuring called “Fleck.” The Heartwood is decay resistant and has good steam bending properties – hence its popularity in traditional boatbuilding (steam bent frames, for example). Also, popularly known as “Stave Oak” since barrel staves are often made out of White Oak.
